Audacity is a free piece of software which allows anyone to easily record and edit a wide variety of sound files, including MP3s.
The program can be used to covert your old tapes or records into MP3s and to convert digital audio files from one format to another. The user also has a range of tools for sound editing at their disposal, all through an easy to use interface. Users can simply cut, paste and move around any selected parts of a track, increase and decrease speed or pitch, change frequencies, fade volume in and out, as well as apply echo or even reverse the track, which can often lead to very amusing results! Ever wondered what Jay-Z might sound like rapping backwards? With this program you can easily find out!
The only downside to this software is that it doesn’t currently support ACC or WMA files, which are the sound files commonly used with iTunes and Windows Media Player.
Downloads are available for all major operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Click here to go to the Audacity homepage. If you get lost, an extensive help guide can be found here.
