ICT is a fast growing sector. Malta is becoming firmly established as a centre of excellence for the industry in the Mediterranean . There is a large influx of companies setting up shop, a flow likely to continue with the advent of the SmartCity project. SmartCity is Malta 's new information technology park being built from scratch by the same people who have set up Dubai 's Internet City . What this is going to mean is that the industry requires trained staff, in large numbers.
STC Training is an NCC Education-accredited centre and has a very high reputation for the delivery of highly-practical yet academically rigorous qualifications designed to give students an international passport to a career in IT and other industries.
As an NCC Education Accredited Training Partner, STC Training has access to an internationally-recognised IT education institution with a wide range of leading-edge IT education and training programmes. The flexibility of these programmes render them adaptable to a wide spectrum of prospective candidates, ranging from students lacking the basic entry qualifications who are given foundation level training to enable them to join mainstream courses in Web Development and Networking, up to tertiary-level students aiming to achieve a prestigious B.Sc. (Hons) degree in IT.
IT professionals need more that just IT skills. One of the problems is a lack of basic management skills and it has to be understood that that the full formation of an IT professional requires the mastering of a range of complementary skills alongside the traditional qualifications in software development or networking. The NCC Programme of study gives the students all that. It includes a range of complementary skills that need to be mastered. IT solutions are tools to deal with real life needs. The people designing and selling these tools need to have an idea of what these needs are, and to be able to communicate them clearly. They also need to be able to function within an organisation, and to have some knowledge of how to manage a company.
Patrick Pullicino, STC's CEO told us We have several companies approaching us and enquiring about the availability of ICT technical people and (if not available) whether we could train up a number, for them. The emphasis always seems to be on people with technical training. We tell them that technical training is the easy part. What is difficult is identifying the complementary skills required for these people to be able to get along with the job!
With this emphasis on complementary skills and connection to the real world, the STC encourages and assists its students to work in the industry during their studies. More than 90% of our students have jobs, Mr. Pullicino explained. We encourage them to do so after their first year, and we will help them to find the jobs as well.
Employers regularly ask STC to provide students as employees. Many of these will then remain with the company on a more permanent basis once they graduate
STC's training programme and the standards it sets are clearly appreciated by the IT industry: many of the employers have provided glowing testimonials in relation to their STC trained staff. This is clear demonstration that the particular mix of technical and complementary skills provided by the STC has an important place in the market
STC has recently relocated to more central premises in Pembroke. The new premises have been purposely renovated to create an ideal IT training centre and have enabled STC to offer more course options and flexibility in their learning programmes. Pembroke also offers the younger and part-time students in employment a far more reachable location.
