Earth Day 2010
Earth Day has been designed to increase awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. Earth Day has been celebrated in many countries since 1970. It was set up by Senator Gaylord Nelson, in an attempt to teach the world about the environment. Earth Day was set up to illustrate that all people, regardless of race, gender, income or geography have the right to live in a healthy, sustainable environment. When it began on 22nd April 1970 20mn Americans took part in educational rallies, and protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups protested against toxic dumps, oil spills, polluting factories, pesticides and the extinction of wildlife. Since 1970 the worldwide rollout has been prolific, with thousands of organisations on board to assist with the global development of this campaign. Today, billions of people around the world take part in local activities. Take a look and see what’s going on around you: .
Some countries extend the observance of Earth Day events to an entire week; this encourages people to get into the habit of carrying out environmentally friendly activities such as recycling, using energy efficiently and reducing or re-using disposable items.
As with any major campaign, Earth Day has several goals, the main worldwide goals being:
- Broaden the meaning of “Environment” – This is very important, as education is the first step that needs to be taken before any progress can be made. When people understand how and why certain things have a negative effect upon the environment they are more likely to relate this to everyday life. With education, we can also offer alternatives, heightening the chance of change.
- Help bring clean water and sanitisation to the world – Many charities have this goal; Earth Day Network allows individuals, organisations and businesses to help fund water projects, to help rural areas around the world gain access to clean water, and sanitary conditions.
- Support Earth Day events and actions around the world – Earth Day is the largest secular holiday in the world, celebrated by over a billion people worldwide. Earth Day support and co-ordinate many events, no matter what scale.
