Fairtrade Fortnight 2010

Fairtrade Fortnight 2010

Fairtrade believes that every producer, regardless of their country and background should be able to ensure that they receive better treatment for the services they provide, and the work they carry out. Fairtrade attempts to strategically alleviate poverty, and allow for sustainable development in communities.Click here to see the Fairtrade website

Why should two billion people survive on less than $2 per day?

Fairtrade organised A ‘Big Swap’ event. The ‘Big Swap’ fortnight has almost come to an end. The whole of the UK have been asked to take a stand, by swapping our everyday goods for fair-trade goods. Fairtrade are aiming for 1,000,001 swaps. Every swap is proof that people in the UK want producers in the developing world to receive a fairer deal. This is a remarkable step in making the world a fairer place.

The Fairtrade foundation is a non-profit organisation, created by a number of charities, including Oxfam and Christian Aid. In the last 30 years, Fairtrade has made overwhelming progress – with many enormous brands committing fully to being 100% Fair trade (Starbuck’s coffee, Cadbury’s Dairy Milk chocolate, Tate and Lyle sugar) with such companies we really can make a difference. There are now 4,500 Fairtrade products available, including fruit, wine, chocolate, tea, coffee, flowers. This year Fairtrade are concentrating on ‘swapping your cuppa’. According to the tea council, the Great British nation consumes around 165,000,000 cups of tea per day! This is therefore one of the biggest potential Fairtrade markets in the UK. Swapping to Fairtrade means that not only do we support the wider community, but also help employees support their families as well. Fairtrade provides education and pensions, so supports the community throughout their lives.

Cadbury’s Dairy Milk is partaking in the ‘Big Swap’ by releasing its first album – ‘Big Swap Songs’. This eclectic album includes tracks from Paulo Nutini, Zingolo feat Tinny and The Big Ghana Band. This has been created by ‘Glass and a Half Full Records’ as a thank you for swapping to Fairtrade products.
