Skype 3G

Skype introduces 3G functionality

Skype is a free-to-download software program that allows the user to make voice calls over the internet, as well as providing instant messaging and file-sharing capabilities. Currently, around 520 million accounts are registered, and the program is available on mobile devices such as Smartphones and Sony PSPs as well as on PCs and laptops.

Making Skype-to-Skype calls over the internet is free. Therefore, it is a massively useful tool for lots of people and businesses across the globe, who can communicate and chat to other users thousands of miles away for free, when calling from a telephone would most likely cost considerable amounts of money.

Early in its history, Skype was limited to desktop PCs and wired laptops due to its reliance on an internet connection. However, with the growth of WiFi and the rapid technological developments of mobile devices in recent years, users can now access Skype from anywhere in the world where they find a WiFi connection.

Recently, Skype have announced that they are taking accessibility to yet another level, by updating their iPhone app to allow calls to be made over a 3G data connection, allowing users even more access on the go. This will initially be free for a trial period until the end of the year, at which point the company will start charging for Skype-to-Skype calls made over the 3G network. Skype currently plan to keep WiFi calls free.
