ICC World Twenty20

The Third annual ICC World Twenty20 Cricket commences on Friday 30th April in the Caribbean.

Twenty20 was originally introduced in the United Kingdom in 2003 for professional inter-county competitions. Since its inauguration the game spread around the cricket world. The first ICC Twenty20 was played in South Africa in 2007. India played Pakistan in the final, and defeated them in the final by five runs. The 2009 Twenty20 was hosted in England with Pakistan this time winning, beating Sri Lanka by 8 wickets.

Twenty20 cricket is a much faster game, with each team batting for a maximum of 20 overs. However, this has sparked criticism about the lack of technical play, as the aim is to get as many 4s and 6s – no matter how you do it. There are a few exceptions to the usual cricket laws:

  • Each bowler may only bowl 1/5 of the total overs per innings
  • If a no-ball is given by the bowler over-stepping the popping crease, it costs one run, and the next bowl will be a ‘free hit’ for the batsman – they can only be dismissed through a run-out
  • No more than five fielders can be on the leg side at any time
  • During the first six overs, a maximum of two fielders can be outside the 30-yard circle After the first six overs, a maximum of five fielders can be outside the fielding circle
  • If the fielding team doesn’t start to bowl their 20th over within 75 minutes, the batting side is credited an extra six runs for every whole over after the 75 minute mark
