A View of Manchester at Christmas

As the weather gets colder, it’s time to get your hat, gloves and scarves at the ready, and head towards the Christmas Market. You know it’s nearly Christmas when the markets arrive - they have become a firm favourite in Manchester over the winter months. Every year quaint wooden chalets, mouth-watering smells and the bustling crowds transform the city centre, allowing you to immerse yourself in the Christmas spirit. There are sweet treats around every corner tempting your senses; pancakes, macaroons, sweets, chocolate, hot strudels, waffles – to name just a few! A mug of hot gluhwein (like mulled red wine), or a glass of cider, or if you wish German lager, along with a bratwurst sausage provide the ideal winter warmers. When you walk around the markets you feel like you’re walking around an adult ‘winter wonderland’. It’s like something from a Christmas film. If only it snowed more – you would think you have been transported to Lapland! However, even if it rains (which is highly probable in Manchester!) you can still enjoy your surroundings and relax under one of the wooden chalets whilst soaking up the atmosphere.

The markets are the backbone of Manchester’s Christmas, and the beginning of everybody’s yuletide countdown since 1998. It is the perfect place to get your evening started, relax after a long day, and pick up some really memorable Christmas presents. In 2007 the main market on Albert Square saw an average of 43,000 visitors every day.

All over the UK and Europe there are splendid Christmas Markets. Even if you do not celebrate Christmas they are still special; the fun-filled atmosphere, gorgeous food and unique handmade gifts.
